I constantly get asked by models if they, “Have what it takes”.

This is a near impossible question question to answer with any kind of certainty. I usually tell all models NOT to consider editorial modelling professionally for a couple of reasons – There is little to no money in it. (Commercial modelling is a different story, but that’s not what I’m talking about here). Secondly, your fate is out of your control.
.
Let me break down a few reasons why I feel this way;
.
1. Magazines have very specific tastes coupled with specific requirements. Sometimes it doesn’t matter if a model is good enough if they are too old, too muscular, not muscular enough, too short, too tall, too sexy, not sexy enough… The list goes on and on. Very few manage to bypass all these obstacles.
.
2. Magazines are businesses. It doesn’t matter if a model wins lots of competitions and has the best physiques. Magazines want to put models on the covers that will either sell the most issues, or by other means, make them the most money. It’s a simple formula, and if you’re marketable enough, or known enough so that issues will sell, your chances are that much better. There’s a reason why we see many of the same faces repeating on covers.
.
3. On a psycological level, employees of magazines have jobs. Like anyone that has had a job will know, it’s cool at the beginning, but soon loses it’s novelty. The people at the magazines are for the most part over their jobs. This means they, like most others, want to leave the office at a reasonable time and want a sense of job security. These personal objectives are jeopardized if they rock the boat.  It’s because of this, that while they might like a model’s look, may not choose them for fear of reprimand or having to explain why. It’s more work, and may jeopardize both their being able to leave at a reasonable time that day, and/or their job security.
.
It’s a terrible thing to put your fate in other’s hands. Regardless of how hard you’ve work or how much you deserve to be in magazines, the final decision is out of your hands. Being in magazines is a fun goal but shouldn’t be the cornerstone of your success.  I think everyone should have great pics. I think there’s a specific liberation one feels in having professional images taken. On numerous occasions I’ve had models comment on how the images have changed their lives. I’m super happy to be able to part of such a significant moment. I see the model’s excitement while reviewing their shots and it saddens me when that is not enough.
.
Not everyone pictured on this site has been published. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter. They looked GREAT to me.
.
So do you have what it takes?  You are beautiful, your pictures are beautiful, everyone including yourself,  loves seeing them – Yes, you have everything it takes.
