An On-Line Journal

2004 04 30 - My Latest Shoot

I stumbled across a model quite by accident the other day. I was surfing the net checking photography links to see what kind of tips I might be able to pick up when I read an entry on one particular thread about a local model.
Usually for models I just check out the regular model databases to see what's out there and available. I tend to avoid having dialogue with models until I see images of them. I've had a few too many instances where the model just didn't have what I was after.
Anyhow, this model's entry had no picture but was very nicely written. It basically said model looking to create portfolio. So I think to myself, do I send her an email to see if she'd be interested in a SESSIONS?

Why not?

I sent her an email and waited.

Soon afterwards I had my reply - So far so good.
However there was a bit of house-cleaning still left to take care of. I still needed to see a picture of her. How do I ask in a nice way, that I require models of certain caliber... BLAH BLAH BLAH...

Anyhow, the hard part is not asking for the picture, the hard part is getting the picture and realizing that I just put myself in the crappy position of apologizing to the model because she just doesn't cut my mustard.

In cases like this;
Paul Buceta - SUCKS!

Back to my story. We talked on the phone and set a time.
Our schedules were mutually beneficial - Something that almost never happens.

In our conversations about what she was after from this shoot one thing stood out.
In fact it downright surprised me.
She did not see herself as sexy.
HUH?
I said to her,"Yeah, I see anything but sexy when I look at you"
(Note two things; 1. The sarcasm, 2. The subtle flirt)

Unfortunately, she just wanted simple pics done. Nothing too sexy as she did not what to put herself out there that way. Again, she just didn't see herself as sexy.
I guess at this point I should mention that not only is she a model, (A sexy one - There, I said it) she's also a fashion journalist. As a matter of fact a very good one. She's written for a few different, very popular organizations.
(I'll have to get her permission to list them, but rest assured they're quite popular).

Meet (The NOT sexy) Julia Gabriel.

Sexy right? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Anyhow, this lack of wanting to be seen as sexy seriously impeded my ability to get more sensual type shots of her. You know the kind - The ones with implied or actual nudity.
I'm not sad about this as I'm sure you'll agree the photos I got were great - Awww, who am I kidding, I'm devastated!

Sure I'm making fun of the situation but in reality this was a very professional shoot. Julia's professional and mature personality help make the whole experience very efficient. She's a strong willed, independent, cultured and ambitious woman. I'm sure this won't be that last we'll be seeing of her.

Usually when I shoot models I like to have fun with them. I like to make the session a bit of a party. The downside to this is that I take a lot less pics and end up with a diminished final product. Thanks to Julia however, I've come to realize that I need to change my ways slightly for the sake of improving the final product.

Now if I can change MY ways, maybe I can convince Julia to change hers?
